Frequently Asked Questions

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine (NM) is a holistic philosophy of health care. It seeks to address the root cause of disease. Naturopathic Doctors seek to support the body return to optimal health using the gentlest means possible. This approach will be different for every person, meaning that NM is highly individualized- two people with the same concern will not be treated the same way. For more information regarding the guiding principles behind NM, click here.

What can a Naturopathic Doctor do for me?

A Naturopathic Doctor (ND) acts as your personal health and wellness private investigator. First, I listen. I spend a lot of time hearing from you, and asking questions. I acknowledge that you are more than a diagnosis, and look at mental, emotional, physiological, environmental and genetic components to your health concerns. Once I have a thorough understanding of the big picture, we will collaborate to form a plan to address your concerns and meet your health goals.

Is Naturopathic Medicine science-based?

Naturopathic Medicine combines evidenced-based medicine with traditional healing practices. Many natural remedies have well-documented benefits, as evidenced by a quick search into the literature. However, others do not. There may not be financial incentive to do the research, or it simply has not been done. In these cases I consider- what are the potential benefits? Harms? Do we have other forms of evidence that this works? Is there a mechanistic model for it? Is it feasible? In the end, you- the patient -always makes the final decision whether a treatment is right for you.

Are Naturopathic Doctors opposed to surgery, medication or traditional cancer treatment?

No. While I will work with you to minimize the necessity for such interventions, every individuals needs are different. My goal is to provide you with options for safe, well-informed care.  In many cases, an ND can help to minimize symptoms associated with surgery, medication side effects and other medical treatments. We are also trained to ensure that our recommendations do not interact with any current conventional medical therapies.

Is a Naturopathic Doctor the same thing as a Homeopath?

No. ND's are regulated licensed primary care practitioners in the province of Ontario. They treat patients holistically using a variety of treatment methods, which might include homeopathy. Homeopaths are trained to use homeopathic medicine, which uses extremely dilute concentrations of substances. While Naturopathic Doctors in Ontario are trained to use homeopathy, not all choose to do so.

Does insurance cover Naturopathic care? Does OHIP?

Most insurance companies cover Naturopathic visits, and many cover 100% of the cost of the visit. Some forms of laboratory testing may also be covered. Check your individual policy provider for details. OHIP does not cover Naturopathic visits.

What types of treatment will a Naturopathic Doctor recommend?

NDs may suggest lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, vitamins/nutritional supplements, botanical medicine, acupuncture, and physical therapies.

What can I expect in the first visit?

Your first visit will last 1-1.5hrs. You are the expert on you, and I want to learn. My goal is to understand as much as possible about your physical, mental and emotional health. I will ask questions regarding your primary concern(s), health history, and perform a head-to-toe review of bodily systems. I may order testing and conduct physical exams. At the end of the visit, we will have a discussion about what I think is occurring, and form a treatment plan.

Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?

Once you have scheduled an appointment, you will receive intake forms using our online booking system "Jane". Please complete the forms in advance of your appointment. Bring all medications and supplements you are currently taking. If you have recent bloodwork or testing, bringing this will also be helpful. If you don't have this, that's okay too- I can request it from your doctor (with your permission).

If this is a second visit or beyond, please bring any diet diaries, body temperature charts, or new medications to the appointment.

Should I keep seeing my Medical Doctor?

Absolutely! I encourage everyone to stay current with their Medical Doctor, as part of your health care team. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and wellness, and all the members of your health care team play an important role. My goal is to work with your other practitioners to keep you healthy.

How do I access my treatment plan?

Treatment plans are sent out using the online booking system, Jane. This is a confidential way for you to access your information and recommendations. Your treatment plan will be available 1-2 days after your appointment. A notification will be sent to your email when it is ready (check junk mail), but you can always log in directly to your account here: https://sswc.janeapp.com/account

If you have any issues accessing your online treatment plan, let us know and we will guide you through it.
